Cost of Gastric Bypass Surgery
The
cost of gastric bypass surgery can vary widely.
Costs depend on the type of surgery, the experience of the surgeon and
his or her staff, the length of time you have to stay in the hospital,
and whether or not any complications develop that require a second surgery.
In addition, you'll need to find out if insurance will
pay for all, or part of the procedure. The cost of obesity is high, so
more and more insurance companies are beginning to add this as an option
to their group policies. However, many employers do not purchase policies
that cover the cost of gastric bypass surgery or other weight loss treatment.
I found one experienced surgical clinic called "Affordable
Bariatrics" that offers the RNY Gastric Bypass procedure for about
$12,000.00, The laparoscopic surgery costs about $16,000.00 at this center.
They also offer monthly payments - but the rub to this deal is that the
surgical center is located in Bogota, Columbia. Naturally, stateside operations
will be more expensive.
What if there are complications? If you insurance doesn't
cover the procedure, will they cover any treatment needed if complications
arise? This is not an idle questions, since complications such as leakage,
infections and gall-stones are common. Unfortunately, many insurance companies
exclude benefits for the procedure itself, and any follow-up care that
is needed, even if the complication is life-threatening. Be sure to ask
your surgical center about the common costs of every conceivable problem
that could arise, and then ask your insurance company for a pre-authorization,
so you'll know where you stand.
Other costs to consider are any long-term follow up that may be needed
in order to prevent nutritional imbalances, and counseling that may be
required to make sure you don't regain any weight. Your surgical center
should be happy to go over all the costs of gastric bypass surgery with
you long before your operation is scheduled to take place.
